How to Get HDMI Input on Laptop?

You can’t ignore the importance of a HDMI port in a laptop. From high-end to mediocre range, now you have laptops that at least feature this essential peripheral interference medium to keep the user’s experience professional. However, having a 2.0 or 3.0 HDMI port version is a different thing!

But how to get HDMI Input on a laptop would be interesting to know. Using a laptop as a display for some other device always proves to be worthy and tech-friendly.

But why to use HDMI interface input for other devices?

Aside from the regular users, mostly gamers are inclined to use HDMI input on a laptop for playing games on a console while using the display as a monitor. Whatever the reason is, having a laptop with HDMI input and knowing its use is still a powerful factor.

Due to its hi-res digital video and studio-grade sound many users like to lean on it. There are different types of HDMI cables out there that come with the specific support for the video support But it’s quite unlikely to have a laptop that comes with the ‘ ‘HDMI-in’’. It’s rare to find indeed.

What is HDMI input and output?

Basically, (High Definition Multimedia Interface) HDMI omits HD signal for various peripherals for audio and video content between devices.

In recent times, almost all devices feature HDMI ports whether it is a gaming console, set-top box, TVs, or the most important laptop. However, there are different HDMI ports, for instance;

  • Mini-HDMI
  • Micro-HDMI
  • Standard

Difference in HDM-in and HDMI-out

The major difference between HDMI-in and HDMI-out is quite simple. Devices usually have either of them and the difference is that HDMI-in is for receiving the audio and video signals, while the HDMI-out is engineered to give the audio and visuals signals.

Using Laptop As An External Screen

Laptop As An External Screen

Get one thing straight, if your laptop doesn’t support HDMI-in it is not practice to use the laptop as a second screen. However, dealing with technology that is ever evolving and also advancing you can say that there are few ‘ways’ to do so.

If you are using the latest Windows 10, you can opt for different ways for connecting two devices for external display purposes via Wi-Fi networks.

For internet connection with wireless approach use Window’s 10 Miracast support. Make sure both your laptop and the PC are in sync connectivity with the very same internet.

Here how you can connect it:

  • Go to the Display Settings of Windows 10 and click on the ‘Projecting to this PC’. If that feature is positive compatible you will have the option to choose ‘Always On’ from the drop down menu.  In order to keep this setting saved, make sure to enable it from both your laptop and PC.
  • Now, tap the Windows + P and open the projection menu. Click on the “Connect to a Wireless Display”. At this point the PC should search out your laptop in the first place.

From now on, your laptop is ready to serve as a secondary monitor for HDMI input. Without any problem, your laptop will configure the display parameters such as resolution and the orientation and all.

Another solution

This DIY method is rather complex and you should at least try it. However, if you want to remove the screen out and out and use it as a portable screen on a controller board, it is not something that is totally impossible.

First of all you should have a control board with the HDMI ports on it. Also it should be supportive and compatible with the LCD of your laptop in the first place.

Plug the ribboned cable into the controller board. After it is inserted to the PC or other device you are working on (with that HDMI port) it should detect it as a secondary display screen.

Know your HIMI port approach

All the connectivity effort will be in vain if you do not know your HDMI port approach that is if it is HDMI-in or out.

As a rule of thumb, if your laptop comes with the HDMI-in it would be marked. Otherwise the laptop features the regular HDMI port which is HDMI-out.
